Hard Boiled Eggs

by Monica

I always keep a few hard boiled eggs ready to eat in the refrigerator. They are a cheap and tasty snack to grab when in the mood. My mother always kept some ready as well for us kids to munch on and she used them in many of her recipes. She would cook a bunch up and give them to us while they were still nice and hot to put in our gloves when we went out in the cold. When and if they broke all you had to do was eat it!

Groundhog Day supper at the community center

by Monica

Tonight I wanted to go to the Community Center to their annual Groundhog Day supper that is put on by the local Ruritan club. I’m pretty sure that I haven’t gone to their previous years dinners, but I could be mistaken. I was hoping that my hubby and son would come with me, but they elected to stay home. Usually I hesitate to go to something like that alone, but I’m tired of not ever going to things like that because I’m the only one that wants to go!

So I went by myself, and sat with a couple I had never met before tonight. They were friendly enough and we shared a few laughs, and actually the lady of the couple confided in my that she had recently suffered the loss of her mother, which brought tears to her eyes. I empathized with her and extended my condolences. By the time we finished eating I think I convinced her to come to the next Ruritan meeting where I hope to see them again.

Local Wineries

by Monica

One of the things that surprised me quite a bit when I moved here was the abundance of local wineries!  It seems that almost every major road that I drive down has signs advertising local wineries.  I had always been given the impression that the Napa Valley in California was “the place” to get good American wine.

Au contraire!  The Gray Ghost winery in Amissville VA has wonderful wine!  I had the opportunity to taste their 2006 Adieu wine at a wine tasting party that a friend held, and I fell in love with it.  I had to go to the winery myself and buy a couple of bottles of it to have for special occasions.

After I learned about The Gray Ghost winery, I went on the Internet to find their location, and found their website.  I was impressed to learn that they have won numerous awards for the wines.  I think that the Gray Ghost is giving the Napa Valley some competition!

Fitness Alliance

by Monica

Now that the holidays are really over and done with I really need to take action in order to get myself back on track with my healthy eating habits that have gone by the wayside with all of the good treats and food that have been a plenty since November. I only have 4 months in order to get my Beach Body in order, so I have been checking into an Extreme Body Workout that I have been hearing and reading about online.

I am also looking into a 90 Day Review program that my sister sent me the link to a few months back that I seem to remember was a good fit for me as well. I really don’t want to go to the beach this summer feeling bad about my body, although not many folks feel totally comfortable with what the good lord gave us. And I can’t afford plastic surgery or any of those other new technologies that people with a lot of cash flow are turning to in order to get their body to a shape that they are content with.

This is a guest post provided by Fitness Alliance.

Home made gifts

by Monica

I like to make home made gifts for people on my gift list.  I enjoy working with my hands, crafting or cooking things, so making the gifts is therapeutic for me.  And the entire time that I’m making the gift I am thinking about the person I’m making it for, so I like to think that the gift is being infused with loving thoughts.  I like to think that the recipient will appreciate the time, effort, and loving thoughts put into the gifts that I make.  I take into consideration what the person’s interests are, and try to make a gift that they will love and use.

The vast majority of my home made gifts have been well received, and I often get special requests from the people who are on my gift list.  I have been surprised, and sometimes dismayed, when I discover that my gift ends up being turned into a cat toy (by a child too young to appreciate the money, time, and effort put into making the gift) or tucked away in a closet because it is appreciated so much that the recipient thinks it is “too good to use” and is afraid to use it!  Or even more dismayed when the recipient turns up their nose at the gift because they think that the homemade gift represents the thought that I was “too cheap” to “buy” them something from the store.  Those people don’t realize that the raw materials used to make the gift often will cost more than buying a gift from the store.

So, giving home made gifts can be tricky sometimes.  I need to research the individual and make sure that they will actually appreciate the home made gift before I go through the time and effort to make it.   Sometimes the best gift to give someone can simply be a gift card, to let them buy what they REALLY want.
